Foundations A1
Spanish has an informal "you" (tú) and a formal "you" (usted). The verb ending and the pronoun both change. Choosing the right one is a social decision, not a grammar one.
Foundations — The Spanish alphabet, vowels and pronunciation rules.
Use tú with friends, family, children and people your own age in a casual setting. Tú hablas español. (You speak Spanish — informal.) This is the form you will use most of the time.
दोस्तों, परिवार, बच्चों और अपनी उम्र के लोगों के साथ अनौपचारिक वातावरण में tú लें। Tú hablas español। (तुम स्पैनिश बोलते हो — अनौपचारिक।) ज़्यादातर यही रूप इस्तेमाल होगा।
Use usted with strangers, elders, officials and anyone you address with respect. Usted habla español. (You speak Spanish — formal.) Usted uses the same verb ending as él/ella: habla, come, vive.
अनजानों, बुज़ुर्गों, अधिकारियों और सम्मान के साथ बोलने पर usted लें। Usted habla español। (आप स्पैनिश बोलते हैं — औपचारिक।) usted का क्रिया अंत él/ella जैसा होता है: habla, come, vive।
For regular verbs, usted uses the same ending as he/she: habla (he speaks / you-formal speak), come (he eats / you-formal eat), vive (he lives / you-formal live). Remembering this one rule makes usted easy.
नियमित क्रियाओं के लिए usted वही अंत इस्तेमाल करता है जो he/she: habla (वह बोलता है / आप बोलते हैं), come (वह खाता है / आप खाते हैं), vive (वह जीता है / आप जीते हैं)। यह एक नियम याद रखने से usted आसान हो जाता है।
Tú eres mi amigo. (You are my friend — informal.) Usted es mi profesor. (You are my teacher — formal.) The same sentence with a different pronoun sounds either warm or respectful.
Tú eres mi amigo। (तुम मेरे दोस्त हो — अनौपचारिक।) Usted es mi profesor। (आप मेरे शिक्षक हैं — औपचारिक।) एक ही वाक्य दूसरे सर्वनाम से या तो प्यारा या सम्मानजनक लगता है।
An English speaker says "usted hablas" or "tú habla". The pronoun and the verb must match: tú hablas, usted habla. Mixing them sounds immediately wrong to a native speaker.
अंग्रेज़ी बोलने वाला "usted hablas" या "tú habla" बोलता है। सर्वनाम और क्रिया मेल खानी चाहिए: tú hablas, usted habla। मिलाने से मूल वक्ता को तुरंत गलत लगता है।
When in doubt, use tú with people your own age in casual settings, and usted with strangers, elders and anyone in a position of authority. When it is truly unclear, usted is the safer choice — it is never disrespectful.
जब शक हो तो अपनी उम्र के लोगों के साथ अनौपचारिक वातावरण में tú लें, और अनजानों, बुज़ुर्गों और अधिकारियों के साथ usted। जब सच में अस्पष्ट हो तो usted सुरक्षित विकल्प है — यह कभी असम्मानजनक नहीं होता।
