Foundations A1
Spanish has two verbs for "to be": ser and estar. Ser is for permanent or defining qualities; estar is for states, conditions and locations. The same noun can take either, and the meaning changes.
Foundations — The Spanish alphabet, vowels and pronunciation rules.
Use ser for identity, origin, profession and permanent qualities. Yo soy estudiante. (I am a student.) Ella es de México. (She is from Mexico.) El cielo es azul. (The sky is blue.)
पहचान, उत्पत्ति, पेशा और स्थायी गुणों के लिए ser लें। Yo soy estudiante। (मैं छात्र हूँ।) Ella es de México। (वह मेक्सिको से है।) El cielo es azul। (आसमान नीला है।)
Use estar for states, feelings, conditions and location. Estoy cansado. (I am tired.) Ella está contenta. (She is happy.) El libro está en la mesa. (The book is on the table.)
स्थिति, भावनाएँ, हालत और स्थान के लिए estar लें। Estoy cansado। (मैं थका हुआ हूँ।) Ella está contenta। (वह खुश है।) El libro está en la mesa। (किताब मेज़ पर है।)
Ella es aburrida. (She is boring — a permanent trait.) Ella está aburrida. (She is bored — a current state.) The same sentence with a different verb means a completely different thing.
Ella es aburrida। (वह उबाऊ है — स्थायी लक्षण।) Ella está aburrida। (वह बोर है — मौजूदा स्थिति।) एक ही वाक्य दूसरी क्रिया से बिलकुल अलग अर्थ बनाता है।
Soy feliz. (I am a happy person — that is who I am.) Estoy feliz. (I am happy right now — a state that will pass.) The first is a definition; the second is a mood.
Soy feliz। (मैं एक खुश व्यक्ति हूँ — यही मैं हूँ।) Estoy feliz। (मैं अभी खुश हूँ — एक अस्थायी स्थिति।) पहला परिभाषा है; दूसरा मूड है।
An English speaker says "el libro es en la mesa" because English uses one verb. Spanish uses estar for location: el libro está en la mesa. Even people and objects are located with estar, never with ser.
अंग्रेज़ी बोलने वाला "el libro es en la mesa" बोलता है क्योंकि अंग्रेज़ी एक ही क्रिया इस्तेमाल करती है। स्पैनिश में स्थान के लिए estar लें: el libro está en la mesa। लोग और वस्तुएँ भी estar से ही स्थान लेते हैं, ser से कभी नहीं।
When you are unsure, ask yourself: is this a permanent fact about the thing, or a current state or location? Permanent = ser, current state or location = estar. That one question solves most cases.
जब अनिश्चित हों तो पूछें: क्या यह चीज़ के बारे में स्थायी तथ्य है, या मौजूदा स्थिति या स्थान? स्थायी = ser, मौजूदा स्थिति या स्थान = estar। यह एक सवाल ज़्यादातर मामले सुलझा देता है।
