Tenses & Aspect B2
A narrative weaves preterite and imperfect: the preterite advances the plot, the imperfect paints the scene and the pluperfect recalls what happened before. Controlling all three is the B2 narrative skill.
Tenses & Aspect — Present, passe compose, imparfait, futur and the moods.
Preterite: Ese día salí temprano. (advances the plot.) Imperfect: Hacía frío y la calle estaba vacía. (sets the scene.) Pluperfect: Había olvidado las llaves. (before the story began.)

Imperfect + cuando + preterite is the backbone of narration: Dormía cuando sonó el teléfono. The scene is in the imperfect, the event in the preterite.
imperfecto + cuando + preterite कथा की रीढ़ है: Dormía cuando sonó el teléfono। दृश्य imperfecto में, घटना preterite में।
Ayer caminaba por el parque cuando vi a un viejo amigo. No lo había visto desde la escuela. Hablamos durante horas y, al final, decidimos cenar juntos.

A learner writes the whole story in the imperfect and it never advances. Each finished action needs the preterite; the imperfect only holds the background.

Underline the actions that move the story and put those in the preterite. Everything surrounding them is scene, and scene takes the imperfect.
