Concessive structures admit something that seems to oppose the main clause: por mucho que + subjunctive, aun cuando, a pesar de que, si bien, y por más que. Each has a fixed mood and register.

aunque (indicative/subjunctive), por mucho que + subjunctive, por más que + subjunctive, aun cuando + subjunctive, a pesar de que (indicative), si bien (indicative, formal), aun sin + infinitive. Register rises from aunque to si bien.

Por mucho que insistas, no cambiaré de idea. (However much you insist, I will not change my mind.) After por mucho que the subjunctive is fixed, because the clause is presented as a possibility, not a fact.

A learner writes *Por mucho que insistes. The structure fixes the subjunctive: por mucho que insistas. The same applies to por más que and aun cuando.

C1 argument is graded on concession: a writer who admits the opposite view and answers it scores higher than one who only asserts. Use one concessive per argument.
