Tenses & Aspect A2
Both tenses are past, but they do different jobs: the preterite tells what happened, the imperfect tells what was going on. In one sentence they cooperate — background in the imperfect, event in the preterite.

The preterite is a dot on the timeline: Ayer fui al mercado. The imperfect is the line behind it: Mientras caminaba, vi a Ana. The event interrupts the scene.
preterite समय-रेखा पर एक बिंदु है: Ayer fui al mercado। imperfecto उसके पीछे की रेखा है: Mientras caminaba, vi a Ana। घटना दृश्य को तोड़ती है।
Ayer leí un libro. (Yesterday I read a book — I finished it.) Ayer leía un libro. (Yesterday I was reading a book — no end stated.) The tense change changes what the listener understands.
Ayer leí un libro। (कल मैंने किताब पढ़ी — पूरी की।) Ayer leía un libro। (कल मैं किताब पढ़ रहा था — अंत नहीं बताया।) काल बदलने से सुनने वाले की समझ बदल जाती है।
Caminaba por la calle cuando me llamó. (I was walking down the street when he called me.) Mientras dormíamos, sonó el teléfono. (While we were sleeping, the phone rang.)
Caminaba por la calle cuando me llamó। (मैं सड़क पर चल रहा था जब उसने फ़ोन किया।) Mientras dormíamos, sonó el teléfono। (जब हम सो रहे थे, फ़ोन बजा।)
A learner uses the imperfect for every completed event because it "sounds softer". Ayer comía con María means "I was eating", not "I ate". Meaning decides the tense, every time.
शिक्षार्थी हर पूरी घटना के लिए imperfecto लगाता है क्योंकि वह "नरम" लगता है। Ayer comía con María का अर्थ "मैं खा रहा था" है, "मैंने खाया" नहीं। अर्थ हर बार काल तय करता है।
Markers like ayer, el año pasado, de repente push toward the preterite. Markers like siempre, todos los días, mientras, de niño push toward the imperfect.
