Foundations A1
Every noun in Spanish is either masculine or feminine, and the article and adjective must match. Most nouns ending in -o are masculine and most ending in -a are feminine — but there are regular exceptions you simply have to learn.
Foundations — The Spanish alphabet, vowels and pronunciation rules.
Most nouns that end in -o are masculine: el libro (the book), el perro (the dog). Most that end in -a are feminine: la casa (the house), la mesa (the table). Learn the gender together with the word, not separately.
ज़्यादातर -o पर खत्म होने वाले संज्ञा पुल्लिंग होते हैं: el libro (किताब), el perro (कुत्ता)। ज़्यादातर -a पर खत्म होने वाले स्त्रीलिंग: la casa (घर), la mesa (मेज़)। लिंग को शब्द से अलग न याद करें, साथ में सीखें।
Some common words break the pattern: la mano (the hand) is feminine even though it ends in -o. el día (the day), el mapa (the map), el problema (the problem) are masculine even though they end in -a. There is no rule — you learn these as a list.
कुछ आम शब्द पैटर्न तोड़ते हैं: la mano (हाथ) -o पर खत्म होने पर भी स्त्रीलिंग है। el día (दिन), el mapa (नक्शा), el problema (समस्या) -a पर खत्म होने पर भी पुल्लिंग हैं। कोई नियम नहीं — इन्हें सूची के रूप में याद करें।
Use el (the) with a masculine noun and la with a feminine one: el niño, la niña. Use un (a/an) with masculine and una with feminine: un hombre, una mujer. The article always tells you the gender of the word next to it.
पुल्लिंग संज्ञा के साथ el (the) और स्त्रीलिंग के साथ la लें: el niño, la niña। पुल्लिंग के साथ un (a/an) और स्त्रीलिंग के साथ una: un hombre, una mujer। लेख हमेशा अगले शब्द का लिंग बताता है।
Do not memorise "casa = house". Memorise "la casa = the house". Do not memorize "problema = problem". Memorize "el problema = the problem". The article is part of the word, not an extra piece you add at the end.
"casa = house" याद न करें। "la casa = the house" याद करें। "problema = problem" नहीं। "el problema = the problem" याद करें। लेख शब्द का हिस्सा है, अंत में जोड़ने वाला अतिरिक्त नहीं।
An English speaker guesses "la problema" because the word ends in -a, or "el mano" because it ends in -o. Both are wrong: it is el problema and la mano. The -o/-a pattern is a habit, not a law — the exceptions are common enough to matter.
अंग्रेज़ी बोलने वाला "la problema" अनुमान लगाता है क्योंकि शब्द -a पर खत्म होता है, या "el mano" क्योंकि -o पर। दोनों गलत हैं: el problema और la mano होता है। -o/-a पैटर्न आदत है, कानून नहीं — अपवाद काफ़ी आम हैं।
When you make a flashcard for a new noun, write el or la in front of it from day one. This one habit removes the most common beginner error in the language and takes no extra effort once it becomes automatic.
नई संज्ञा के फ़्लैशकार्ड पर पहले दिन से el या la लिखें। यह एक आदत भाषा की सबसे आम शुरुआती गलती को हटा देती है और एक बार आने पर कोई अतिरिक्त परिश्रम नहीं लेती।
