Tenses & Aspect A2

The subjunctive is the mood of wishes, doubts, emotions and impersonal necessity. It appears mostly after que when the main clause does not assert a fact: Quiero que vengas.

Lección

The trigger before que

Quiero que vengas. (I want you to come.) Dudo que sea verdad. (I doubt it is true.) Es importante que estudies. (It is important that you study.) The main verb is a wish, doubt or value judgement, so the second verb takes the subjunctive.

Quiero que vengas। (मैं चाहता हूँ कि तुम आओ।) Dudo que sea verdad। (मुझे संदेह है कि यह सच है।) Es importante que estudies। (यह ज़रूरी है कि तुम पढ़ो।) मुख्य क्रिया इच्छा, संदेह या मूल्यांकन है, इसलिए दूसरी क्रिया subjuntivo लेती है।

Forming the present subjunctive

Take the yo form of the present, drop -o, and add the opposite vowel: hablar → hable, hables, hable, hablemos, habléis, hablen. comer → coma, comas... vivir → viva, vivas... Irregulars include ser (sea), ir (vaya), haber (haya), saber (sepa).

वर्तमान का yo रूप लें, -o हटाएँ, और विपरीत स्वर जोड़ें: hablar → hable, hables, hable, hablemos, habléis, hablen। comer → coma, comas... vivir → viva, vivas... अनियमित: ser (sea), ir (vaya), haber (haya), saber (sepa)।

Subjunctive in real sentences

Espero que estés bien. (I hope you are well.) No creo que tenga razón. (I don't think he is right.) Es mejor que salgamos ahora. (It is better that we leave now.)

Espero que estés bien। (मुझे आशा है तुम ठीक हो।) No creo que tenga razón। (मुझे नहीं लगता वह सही है।) Es mejor que salgamos ahora। (बेहतर है हम अब निकलें।)

Using the indicative after a wish

A learner says *Quiero que vienes by copying the indicative. With querer, esperar, dudar and impersonal expressions, the second verb must be subjunctive: Quiero que vengas.

शिक्षार्थी indicative की नकल करके *Quiero que vienes बोलता है। querer, esperar, dudar और निर्वैयक्तिक अभिव्यक्तियों के बाद दूसरी क्रिया subjuntivo होनी चाहिए: Quiero que vengas।

Two subjects, one wish

If the two clauses have different subjects and the first is a wish or doubt, you need que + subjunctive. If there is one subject, use an infinitive instead: Quiero venir. (I want to come.)

दोनों उपवाक्यों के विषय अलग हों और पहला इच्छा या संदेह हो, तो que + subjuntivo चाहिए। एक ही विषय हो तो अनंत रूप लगाएँ: Quiero venir। (मैं आना चाहता हूँ।)
