El ritmo, la puntuación y la prosodia

Usage & Register C2

Punctuation controls the rhythm of written Spanish, and prosody does the same in speech. A comma, a dash or a full stop decides where the voice pauses and where the meaning lands.

Usage & Register — Formal and informal Spanish, false friends, common mistakes.

The marks and their work

The comma marks a short breath within a clause group; the dash (—) introduces an aside or a dialogue turn; the semicolon links two related clauses; the period closes an idea. Spanish also opens questions and exclamations doubly: ¿...?, ¡...!

अल्पविराम उपवाक्य-समूह के भीतर छोटा श्वास बताता है; निर्देशक (—) किसी उपवाक्य या संवाद-बारी को जोड़ता है; अर्धविराम दो संबंधित उपवाक्य जोड़ता है; पूर्णविराम विचार बंद करता है। स्पेनी प्रश्न और उद्गार दोनों तरफ़ चिह्न लगाती है: ¿...?, ¡...!

Punctuation shaping the voice

Llegó tarde, como siempre. —No pienso esperar —dijo ella. No era fácil; tampoco imposible. ¿Vienes o te quedas? ¡Qué sorpresa verte aquí!

Llegó tarde, como siempre। —No pienso esperar —dijo ella। No era fácil; tampoco imposible। ¿Vienes o te quedas? ¡Qué sorpresa verte aquí!

A comma can change the meaning

A comma can change the meaning: No, vino versus No vino. The vocative also takes a comma: Juan, ven. Rules are firm where meaning is at stake and flexible where only rhythm is.

अल्पविराम अर्थ बदल सकता है: No, vino बनाम No vino। संबोधन भी अल्पविराम लेता है: Juan, ven। जहाँ अर्थ दाँव पर हो वहाँ नियम कठोर, जहाँ केवल लय हो वहाँ लचीले।

Missing the opening question mark

A learner writes *¿Cómo estás. with only the closing mark. Spanish opens the question too: ¿Cómo estás? Missing the opening mark changes the reading of the whole sentence.

शिक्षार्थी केवल अंतिम चिह्न के साथ *¿Cómo estás. लिखता है। स्पेनी प्रश्न का आरंभ भी करती है: ¿Cómo estás? आरंभिक चिह्न छूटने से पूरे वाक्य का पठन बदल जाता है।

Let the ear edit

Read your text aloud. Where you naturally pause, a mark is missing; where you breathe without a pause in the meaning, a comma is extra. The ear is the best editor.

अपना पाठ ज़ोर से पढ़ें। जहाँ स्वाभाविक रुकाव हो वहाँ चिह्न छूटा है; जहाँ अर्थ में रुकाव न हो पर श्वास लें वहाँ अल्पविराम अतिरिक्त है। कान सर्वोत्तम संपादक है।
