haber + participle

haber + participle forms the compound infinitive: haber visto, haber dicho, haber ido. Its time is earlier than the main verb, and the subject stays the same: Siento haber llegado tarde.

After emotion, knowledge and reporting

It follows verbs of emotion, knowledge and reporting: Me arrepiento de haber mentido. Creo haber entendido. Deberías haber avisado. The participle never changes: haber ido, not *haberes idos.

Creo haber entendido। Deberías haber avisado।

Compound infinitives in context

Gracias por haber venido. Lamento no haber podido ayudar. Debes haber sido muy valiente. No recuerdo haber visto esa película.

Gracias por haber venido। Lamento no haber podido ayudar। Debes haber sido muy valiente। No recuerdo haber visto esa película।

Using it for a present duty

A learner uses *Deberías haberlo hecho for a present duty, but haber hecho looks back at a missed past action. For a duty still ahead, use the simple infinitive: Deberías hacerlo.

Read it as "having done"

Gloss the compound infinitive as "having done". Gracias por haber venido = thanks for having come. The English gloss pins the earlier time and stops the slip.
