Spanish marks register openly: the same idea has a coloquial, a neutral and a formal form. B2 writers move between a letter, a report and a message without mixing them.

Lección

The three registers

Coloquial: molar, currar, flipar, tío. Neutral: gustar, trabajar, sorprenderse. Formal: resultar grato, desempeñar un puesto, causar asombro. Choosing the wrong one is read as a bigger error than a grammar slip.

The formal letter

Open with Estimado/a Sr./Sra.; close with Atentamente or Un cordial saludo. Use usted and full forms. Keep contractions and interjections out. This frame is worth marks by itself.

Estimado/a Sr./Sra. से खोलें; Atentamente या Un cordial saludo से बंद करें। usted और पूर्ण रूप लगाएँ। संकुचन और विस्मयादिबोधक बाहर रखें। यह ढाँचा अपने आप अंक दिलाता है।

Same idea, two registers

Coloquial: Me mola mucho tu idea. Formal: Su propuesta me parece muy acertada. Neutral: Me gusta mucho tu idea. All three mean the same; only the register changes.

बोलचाल: Me mola mucho tu idea। औपचारिक: Su propuesta me parece muy acertada। तटस्थ: Me gusta mucho tu idea। तीनों का अर्थ एक; केवल शैली बदलती है।

Mixing tú and usted

A learner writes Estimado Juan, ¿puedes enviarme...? The formal opening and the informal verb clash. If the letter opens with Estimado, it continues with usted throughout.

शिक्षार्थी Estimado Juan, ¿puedes enviarme...? लिखता है। औपचारिक आरंभ और अनौपचारिक क्रिया टकराते हैं। पत्र Estimado से खुले तो पूरा usted में चलेगा।

Keep a register per text type

Decide the register before writing the first line: message = coloquial, email = neutral, report = formal. Then every sentence has one target, and mixing becomes impossible.

पहली पंक्ति लिखने से पहले शैली तय करें: संदेश = बोलचाल, ईमेल = तटस्थ, रिपोर्ट = औपचारिक। फिर हर वाक्य का एक लक्ष्य होगा और मिलान असंभव हो जाएगा।
