El discurso literario

Usage & Register C2

Four narrative modes

Four modes: narración (events, indefinido), descripción (scene, imperfecto), diálogo (direct speech) and monólogo (inner voice). A literary text switches between them, and each switch is signalled by tense and punctuation.

The modes on the page

Narración: Cruzó la calle y abrió la puerta. Descripción: La niebla cubría los tejados. Diálogo: —No esperaba verte. Monólogo: ¿Y si todo hubiera sido distinto?

The modes mix on purpose

The modes mix on purpose: a description can interrupt an action to slow it down, and a monologue can slip into the narrator's voice. The shift is the author's rhythm, not an error.

A story that never advances

A learner keeps the imperfect for the main events and the story never advances: *Cruzaba la calle y abría la puerta. Narrative events need the indefinido; save the imperfect for the scene.

Mark the switches

Mark each mode in the margin as you read. Seeing where the author switches teaches you to switch deliberately in your own writing.
